Question about genetics and pigmentation in humans?

I know a relative who as a baby was labelled with "mild albinism" by a doctor. He has pigmentation in his eyes and hair to quite a high degree, however, his skin produces little to no pigmentation. (he has actaully started producing more pigmentation over time as he grew up; but as a baby he had light hair and eyes as well). He looks just like everyone else now although he has light skin.

I asked my prof about this and she said he couldn't be classified as albino, b/c that's an all or nothing deal. There's one pigment in humans, therefore one enzyme, and a non-functioning/faulty enzyme means light/pinkish irises, whitish hair, and very pale skin.

We also studied the himalayan cats, and that they produce multiple pigments like some other animals (so I only heard of these mild or partial cases in animals)

So my question is, is this boy an albino? What's the genetic disorder, how does it work? Plz explain the gene interaction as well, b/c I want to understand it better. Thanks! =)

Albinism is classified by the loss of melanin production. There are multiple genes in the pathway of this synthesis that can cause the loss of melanin production. There are multiple forms of this and varying degrees of pigmentation in the eyes and elsewhere. The fact that it showed up in your family would likely put your kids at risk for this. The kid is albino based on what you have said, even if pigmentation started happening later on, he still carries the recessive genes.

You've asked a rather loaded question. Now, no one knows exactly what causes the genes to interact in a way that prevents the enzyme from producing pigmentation. Additionally because your relative has a child who was labeled with 'mild albinism' doesn't mean that you will have a child with the same condition. In any interaction between egg and sperm, there are genes that are active and genes that are recessive (meaning inactive). The genes that become predominant in your child may not be the same as the genes in your relative's child.

Look at a family of disimiliar siblings. You may have in a family with the same two people as parents children who have different hair color, eye color and in some instances skin color. Genetics is an area of science in which there is still a lot of work being done. However, one day I suppose will have all the answers.

Jaiden鈥檚 family was a traveling family they traveled all around the United States in a mobile home spending most of the time camping or exploring.

Chapter 2

The Power Of The Thunder Dragon

Jaiden awoke slowly but he felt normal

as if nothing had ever happened, but he knew that something about him was different. At breakfast he had gotten over excited because his mother prepared a special meal for him. He sat down and suddenly jolts of electricity whipped from all five of his fingers and had hit the table.

The table was shaking and began to burn. It

seemed like the more he concentrated on the table the bigger the electricity beam got.

He started to get scared and closed his eyes and thought stop. The electricity beam stopped. The second the electricity stopped he knew somehow he gained something powerful. His mother knew what he had was a result of the object he had picked up in the forest.

When she was a little girl she saw a comet that looked like a orb or ball of light she was hypnotizes by the weird light that it made.

鈥淚t looks exactly the same.鈥?Whispered Kenya as if in a trance.

鈥淲hat?!鈥?asked Jaiden alarmed by his mom鈥檚 remark.

Kenya snapped out of the trance and told him about the comet she saw. Then told him something else something that made him excited and worried at the same time.

鈥淚 saw that comet and saw how it moved as if controlled by something.鈥?Said Jaiden鈥檚 mom, 鈥渢hat stream of electricity that came out of your hand gave out the same light as the comet. I know that I wasn鈥檛 the only person to see that comet people probably know more about it than me so I think we should find out more about your new鈥? Umm ability.鈥?br> 鈥淵ea maybe there is more to this power than we think.鈥?Said Daniel.

鈥淢aybe we should go to a library in the next town to look for more information.鈥?Said Jaiden.

When they arrived at the next town they went strait to the library. They looked every where they could think of until Daniel said, 鈥淵ou know something like this the government should have investigated.

Maybe we should look in the declassified section.鈥?br> 鈥淕ood idea!鈥?said Jaiden

They went to the declassified section and found a book that read, 鈥淪uspicious Comets鈥?in the book they found a great group of discredited myths about comets that is where they found the article about the Blue Star Comet or B.T.R. It read 鈥?This comet was believed to give special powers of electricity and the ability to transform into a normal sized dragon not much bigger than the human that transformed into it.

This article was written by Trayvone M Mathis he was believed to be the original Thunder Dragon until he died in 1984. It is also said that he formed all his powers into a comet and sent it around the world his powers would then land on earth near a person that was tough enough to fight evil but nice enough to help anybody in need.

Chapter 3: The Attack

鈥淲ow!鈥?Said Jaiden in surprise.

鈥?We have to train now!鈥?said Jaiden鈥檚 Mom

鈥淎 power like this couldn鈥檛 have just started on earth there has to be more than just humans tracking down this power.

Five days from the discovery of the power

and sent as many bolts of electricity towards the creature as he could. The bolts hit the creature and it suddenly started to shake but Jaiden could feel the bolts getting weaker, and concentrated hard on controlling the electricity. Suddenly the electricity shined blue than yellow and flew back at Jaiden. He felt his body change and thought, I transformed if I concentrate I can form the electricity into any form of power.

Jaiden then put his hands together and said, 鈥淒estruction blast鈥?a ball of electricity formed and he sent it toward the creature.

The creature was hit seconds before he said, 鈥淭his isn鈥檛 over there are many other aliens in the universe that are hunting for that power!鈥?br> 鈥淲-what just happened?鈥?asked Daniel

鈥淚 figured it out I can control it I can control it!鈥?Yelled Jaiden

鈥淒on鈥檛 get so happy you heard what that alien said.鈥?said Kenya.

鈥淲hy?鈥?said Jaiden

鈥淏ecause if what that alien said was true were in trouble.鈥?said Kenya

鈥淥kay okay so you鈥檙e saying that we are in danger of getting killed by some weird aliens!鈥?Said Daniel in surprise.

鈥淵es, and now we have to train no exceptions!鈥?said Kenya. Soon Kenya began to act like a drill sergeant making Jaiden practice his destructo-ball while she and Daniel learned how to handle spears and other common weapons. After a few days of training they were tiered and weak from constantly training.

鈥淲e have to think of something that isn鈥檛 so tiring鈥? said Daniel

鈥淵ah鈥? said Jaiden

鈥淲ell okay I guess we could take a break from training for just a few days or maybe a week but remember the next time we face an alien there won鈥檛 be time to take a break.鈥?said Kenya

Chapter 4: The First heist

鈥淗ey, now that we鈥檙e finally leaving this hot

country side maybe I should have some fun with my powers.鈥?Said Jaiden

Jaiden sneaked out of the Mobil Home and walked to a phone line he thought electric phone sure enough a string of energy went from his finger to the telephone

Imagine you are tooling around town in your Ferrari. It閳ユ獨 your third car. You mostly take it out for Sunday drives. You are crossing some train tracks and the car dies. A train is coming towards you. You notice a switch that will send the train down another track. But seated on the other track is a house filled with starving African refugees. If you throw the switch the refugees will all, die. What do you do?? I would hope you let the train hit the car. But here is the rub. By choosing to buy the car and not using the money to make the world a better place are you not in effect killing the refugees anyway?

I have sent this story to hundreds of people. The response is almost always the same.

Actually the most common response is nothing. But those who do respond usually say I work hard, etcetera, etcetera, I deserve, etcetera, etcetera.

But if you own 3 Ferraris, or even one for that matter, it is as much about luck as it is about deserving. If your are Shaquille Oneal and you were lucky enough to get the genes you got you are just as lucky as the child born to poverty and oppression is unlucky. There is no harder work NO harder life than imposed poverty and NO ONE deserves that life.

Let閳ユ獨 look at it a different way. How much does that 5th Hummer increase the quality of your life? How much more happy are you with that car than you would be with out it? The difference is marginal at best. You probably would not even notice the difference if it was not in the garage. But you do have a 5 car garage and have to keep it filled. How much does it cost to fix a hair lip on a poor little girl in Bolivia, maybe $ 5,000? So instead of spending $ 50,000 on that car and making your life a tiny bit better, why not make 10 lives infinitely better?

I was having lunch with a friend and before we went to lunch we popped into a jewelry store. She has a friend who makes jewelry and she wanted to show it to me. We were looking and I recognized a belt that my friend wears. I asked how much for the belt. The salesperson said $ 5,000. My friend has a $ 5,000 belt!!!

So while we were having lunch I asked my friend how much different her life would be if she did not have the belt. 閳ユ罚ot much閳?she said. Then I asked. 閳ユ窔f your granddaughter had a hair lip and you had to sell the belt to fix it what would you do.閳? She said, 閳ユ凡ell I would just take the money out of the bank.閳? I pointed out that this was all fantasy/hypothesis and that we have to assume that selling the belt is the only way to repair her grand daughter閳ユ獨 hair lip. It is about compassion knowing that when you buy something extravagant and wasteful you are stealing bread from a starving child. I know it閳ユ獨 hard because we live in an extravagant country. But you have to know this grand and lavish American way of life is one of the main reasons why the rest of the world hates us. And, why they hijack airplanes and crash them into our sky scrapers.閳? She said, 閳ユ凡ell what am I supposed to do?閳? I wrote this down on a piece of paper and handed it to her. 閳ユ窡ive simply so that others may simply live.閳?br>

A couple of days later I was thinking about a singer I saw once. His name was T-Buck. He was talking between songs and he said. 閳ユ返ou know we worship all kinds of things, money, Jesus, cars, Buddha, Allah, but more than any of those things we should worship each other.閳? I recently went to the Philippines. It閳ユ獨 amazing what the internet can do. I googled Philippine surf camp, and a week later I was stepping off of a twin propeller, 12 seat airplane onto tiny island in the middle of nowhere, PI. This island is so remote that they can not get many types of heavy machinery there, so they can not make gravel with machines. Instead they use people. The human gravel makers squat on their heels, with hammers and chisels, and break up rocks. They do it 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, with no safety glasses, no protection on their hands, for 25 cents an hour, $ 2 a day. Even though I was half way around the world, on the very cusp of civilization The Catholic Church was everywhere. One evening began with the sound of church bells ringing, and a bit later I could hear the choir too. Then a few hours later a small stream of people trickled into the neighbors place, maybe 20 in all. They ate dinner and then began to sing and pray. As they were singing I was thinking about T-Buck. It suddenly occurred to me that more than anything the world needs 閳ユ翻he Church of Each Other閳?

So I say that if you have 100 pairs of shoes, $ 10,000 watches, 5 ferraris, etc., you are worshiping yourself, and you lack a certain type of compassion or maybe you just are just conveniently not paying attention. I am not advocating life in a tent. I am just saying to make conscious choices, and don閳ユ獩 be frivolous, and wasteful. You can still have a nice house, a nice car, etc., but just THINK. That閳ユ獨 all just THINK, and be aware that we all are one. And whatever you take for yourself that is more than you what NEED you are taking from someone else.

I would like to close with a quote from Bill Maher.

What that means is that really good marketers make really good ads and they make us gullible consumers think that diamonds, beanie babies, whatever are rare, valuable, and worth a lot of money. Diamonds are a dime a dozen, it just so happens that most of them come from Africa and not that many people mine them. SO, the diamond miners got together about 100 years ago and decided to limit the supply and they did a really great job of marketing. They used to pay MILLIONS of dollars to make movies with big movie stars just so they could have a scene where the Brad Pitt of the day would ask the Angelina Jollie of the day to marry her and he would give her a diamond ring. So now in today閳ユ獨 times Diamonds are Forever, Every Kiss Begins with Kay, and on and on. They do a GREAT JOB!!!! Those are great ads!!!! Have you noticed that the folks who run the Diamonds are Forever ads are the De Beers family. Those are the folks who mine the diamonds. They don閳ユ獩 care where you buy the diamonds, just as long as you buy them. So anyone reading this ever pay over $ 50 for a beanie baby??? Feel kind of silly? Maybe in a 100 years or so people will look back and say, those silly 20th century people used to pay large amount of money for bags of beans and shiny rocks.

And by the way those diamond miners, the De Beers and their friends are the same folks who brought us one hundred years of Apartheid and complete racial domination in South Africa. 100 years of white folks KICKING BLACK ***!!! I am serious, in the last 20 years literally Millions of people in countries like the Congo have been killed in power struggles over diamonds.

I've been wondering lately why shades make people look better. We all know that many people mess with natural selection by trying to make themselves look better than they naturally do (myself included). This includes gelling hair, curling/straightening hair, shaving, tanning purposely, wearing jewlery, taking steroids, plastic surgery, etc. Although I believe the strangest change in one's appearance is wearing shades. Gelling hair will make it look better, shaving will make you look less dirty, steroids will help make you stronger and bigger, and jewlery will give you a shine (and humans are known for liking shiny things), but what exactly do shades do? They tint/hide your eyes and some of the skin around it. What is it about the human mind that makes it seem like people look better with shades on?

Also, if you disagree and think it's totally dependant on the person, please answer with that.

Please don't answer saying something like, "It makes you look cool."

Shades or glasses highlight the shape of the face. A well suited shape of shades will highlight the shape of a face but a badly suited pair of glasses will really mess up your appearance. It gives character as well as mystery to the person wearing it.

I am natural since I was born. Maybe I would look better with some gel and other things, but it wouldn't be me. I want that a girl likes me because of who I really am, with nothing else. I also like natural girls, we say "acqua e sapone", but I think it's up to our tastes. Generally it's not important for me how they look, but how they really are inside.

P.S.: Bedmechanic, I think so. I hate talking with people in front of me when I can't look at their eyes.

I can't believe how many people ask about getting rid of bees! Don't you all realize that bees are essential to our very survival? Bees.. honeybees polinate the vast majority of our food crops. Without them, eventually there will be no plant reproduction.. without plant reproduction, we'll have no other choice than to eat whatever's left.. each other. If you get rid of bees, develop a taste for Soylent Green, because that is the food of a future without bees.

If you don't want bees in your garden, don't plant flowers. The flowers are for the bees anyway.. you just get to look at them- for the bees, it's food.

my question is.. If you hate bees.. what are you doing in the garden? why do you wear perfume and hair products that smell like flowers? do you enjoy the concept of eating human flesh?

We.. the human race will follow bees into extinction.. think about it.. comment, if you wish.

i agree-- i read that many bees are going away because of cellular phone waves... there are entire forests that depend on certain bees for their existence. there are trees in brazil that rely on bees and over 2 million plant %26amp; animal species that depend on that exact tree for survival. no bees there= no trees which just goes down the line of destruction for too many. i agree that the bees are necessary and even nice to watch in the garden. pollinating and going from each flower. those who don't like bees in the fruit- there are special nets you can buy that go around fruits to protect them from insects. everyone else, the bees don't do anything to you. they are just there, near their food source. no different than bird feeders- food that attracts certain animals. just natural. and it's an interesting thing to watch.

I fear you may be getting a little hysterical over this to be perfectly honest.

People don't like bees because they may have been stung as children (or adults), and the threat of sting is just too great (especially since some can have major anaphalactic shocks from being stung by bees or wasps). Its the same as if you saw any stinging insect, or anything that could potentially hurt you in some way.

I do agree that without bees there would be no pollination of crops in a natural way, but that wont stop people being afraid of them, or wanting them to be somewhere else.

Oh and btw, you can happily fertilise crops without bees

A big part of the problem is that the majority of the population will identity the shiny, yellow-and-black striped Yellow Jacket, as a "bee", instead of the agressive wasp that it is. (I've even shown pictures to people, trying to explain the difference, and they will swear, in the face of direct evidence, that Yellow Jackets are "bees")

They are afraid of those, and may have been stung by them, call them "bees", therefore they're afraid of "bees".

The majority of wasps, even, are beneficial, and want nothing to do with people. They paracitize the "bad" bugs in our garden, and generally are helpful.

But the few agressive, bad-tempered wasps spoil it for all the rest of them, as the uneducated cannot differeniate them.

I don't think it's hatred so much as it is fear of being stung. People fear spiders (perhaps even more than bees), but they keep the bug population down.

European honeybees in Australia are a major pest for hollow dependent fauna. Swarming bees will displace parrots, possums, owls, bats and many other types of native Australian fauna. For this they are not welcome. Bumblebees are also not native to Australia however have been introduced to Tasmania, either by horticulturists or after having been blown across the Tasman Sea from New Zealand (where they are also introduced). If Bumblebees come across to mainland Australia, many of the "sleeper" weeds that need the particular foraging actions of Bumblebees to reproduce effectively, will explode into another ecological problem. The stinging of bees is a pain (ha ha) but it goes away - this is good. The stinging and other effects of bees making the native Australian fauna go away is not quite so good.

Australia has native bees which for the most part are stingless and they are delightful little beasts, some of which also make harvestable amounts of honey.

All bees are useful for the pollination of plants, however the introduced species, whatever the country are a potential problem to the ecological balance of the native flora and fauna.

Do you think it's a good idea for school uniforms? My daughter is starting high school and the kids all have to wear uniforms. Frankly I think it's a great thing because it puts everyone on an even keel--there's no issues of dress code (other than wearing the proper uniform and accessories) and the focus is taken off "individualism" as far as what's current and trendy on the designer scale and put on community as a school and teamwork and discipline and respect.

I think this will make the kids focus on one another as human beings rather than put the focus on one's makeup or hair do or other frivolous unimportant and insignificant issue that deters from their studies and comradery.

I spent less money on clothing. Yeah, the uniformed kid still had "civvies" but there weren't as many clothes.

Uniforms the school chose were quality garments that lasted forever. The tee shirts were inexpensive ($5-$7).

Kid got dressed faster in the morning.

Fewer clothing arguments.

The local transit could identify who the hooligans were by their clothing. THe school got calls %26amp; kids told to smarten up.

Research has shown that Canadian schools see uniforms as a method of underscoring the importance of academics, as opposed to US where uniforms are seen as a way to reduce crime.

I wish all schools had uniforms. I'm tired of seeing girls in skanky, sleazy hooker outfits, and boys dressed like junior rappers gone bad.

One caution. If your kid is required to wear a uniform, the teaching staff should also be in a school uniform too. My kids school started off this way, and everyone supported the uniform policy. Change of administration, and staff no longer required to wear uniform, and kids felt this was unfair.

It does put all the students on a level playing field instead of putting the lower income kids in a corner right off the bat... A fairly famous atheist. Pretty much was the one who introduced the general population to the term 'atheist'.

I agree with you. A lot of atheists, myself included more often than I like to admit, often operate from a siege mentality in the USA because we are a minority smaller than most other demographics, where a vast portion of the majority (I'm saying nothing of HOW vast in compare to the whole, just a large number) sincerely hate and despise atheists in contradiction of the teachings of their majority.

It really works both ways though -- sadly, we are ALL a bit prejudiced. We may go out of our way to integrate and accept all people, but it is a simple fact that the human mind is a generalization learning machine. Unfortunately, a large number of the Christians on this site are unkind and hate-filled people, and are becoming the overwhelming Christian generalization. Of course, the reverse applies to the atheists too.

It's a sad fact that sane, calm, and rational people tend to quietly go about their business, and only the insane, passionate, or irrational people scream their ideas from the top of the largest building in town for all to hear.

1 Kaf. Ha. Ya. `Ain. Sad.

This is the only Sura which begins with these five Abbreviated Letters, K.,H.,Y.,A.,S. For Abbreviated Letters generally.

2 (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His Servant Zakariya.

The Mercy of Allah to Zakriya was shown in many ways: (1) in the acceptance of his prayer; (2) in bestowing a son like Yahya; and (3) in the love between father and son, in addition to the work which Yahya did as Allah's Messenger for the world.

3 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret .

In secret: because he feared that his own family and relatives were going wrong, and he wanted to keep the lamp of Allah burning bright. He could not very well mention the fear about his colleagues (who were his relations)

4 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest O my Lord in my prayer to Thee!

This preface shows the fervent faith of Zakariya. Zakariya was a prophet of the Most High Allah. His office was in the Temple, and his relatives were his colleagues. But he found in them no true spirit of the service of Allah and man. He was filled with anxiety as to who would uphold the godly ideas he had in mind, which were strange to his worldly colleagues.

5 "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself

His was not merely a desire for a son. If it had been, he would have prayed much earlier in his life, when he was a young man. He was too full of true piety to put merely selfish things into his prayers. But here was a public need, in the service of the Lord.

6 "(One that) will (truly) represent me and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!"

It is true that an heir inherits property, but his higher duty is to represent in everything the personality of him from whom he inherits. It is doubtful whether Zakariya had any worldly property. But he had character and virtue, as a man of God, and this he wanted to transmit to his heir as his most precious possession. It was almost the most precious possession of the posterity of Jacob. The people around him had fallen away from Allah's Message. Could his heir, like him, try and renew it?

7 (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: his name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before."

This was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus. In accordance with his father's prayer he, and Jesus for whom he prepared the way, renewed the Message of Allah, which had been corrupted and lost among the Israelites. The Arabic form Yahya suggests "Life". The Hebrew form is Johanan, which means "Jehovah has been Gracious".

8 He said: "O my Lord! how shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?"

Who is the "He" in this clause? As I have construed it, following the majority of Commentators, it means the angel who brought the message from Allah. But some Commentators construe it to refer to Zakariya. In that case the meaning will be: Zakariya after a little reflection said (in his wonder) "So!", i.e., "Can it really be so? Can I really have a son in my old age?"

9 He said: "So (it will be): thy Lord saith `That is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before when thou hadst been nothing!' "

Every man was nothing just before he was created, i.e., his personality was called into being by Allah. Even if there are material processes in forming the body, in accordance with the laws of nature, the real creative force is the power of Allah. But here there is a subtler meaning. John was the harbinger of Jesus, preparing the way for him; and this sentence also prepares us for the more wonderful birth of Jesus himself, see verse 21 below. Everything is possible with Allah.

10 (Zakariya) said "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign" was the answer "shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights although thou art not dumb." 2464 2465

The "Sign", was in order to convince Zakariya that the Lord's promise was true.

11 So Zakariya came out to his people from his chamber: he told them by

signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening.

12 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him wisdom even as a youth.

Time passes. The son is born. In this section of the Sura the centre of interest is Yahya, and the instruction is now given to him. 'Keep fast hold of Allah's revelation with all your might': for an unbelieving world had either corrupted or neglected it, and Yahya (John the Baptist) was to prepare the way for, Jesus, who was coming to renew and re-interpret it.

Hukm, translated Wisdom, implies something more than Wisdom; it is the Wisdom or Judgment that is entitied to judge and command, as in the matter of denouncing sin.

13 And pity (for all creatures) as from Us and purity: he was devout

John the Baptist did not live long. He was imprisoned by Herod, the tetrarch (provincial ruler under the Roman Empire), whom he had reproved for his sins, and eventually beheaded at the instigation of the woman with whom Herod was infatuated. But even in his young life, he was granted (1) wisdom by Allah, for he boldly denounced sin; (2) gentle pity and love for all Allah's creatures, for he moved among the humble and lowly, and despised "soft raiment"; and (3) purity of life, for he renounced the world and lived in the wilderness. All his work he did in his youth. These things showed themselves in his conduct, for he was devout, showing love to Allah and to Allah's creatures, and more particularly to his parents (for we are considering that aspect of his life): this was also shown by the fact that he never used violence, from an attitude of arrogance, nor entertained a spirit of rebellion against divine Law.

14 And kind to his parents and he was not overbearing or rebellious.

15 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)!

This is spoken as in the life-time of Yahya. Peace and Allah's Blessings, were on him when he was born; they continue when he is about to die an unjust death at the hands of a tyrant; and they will be specially manifest at the Day of Judgment.

16 Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East.

the story of Mary. Here the whole theme is different: it is the personal side of the experiences of the worshippers of Allah in relation to their families or environment.

To a private eastern chamber, perhaps in the Temple. She went into privacy, from her people and from people in general, for prayer and devotion. It was in this state of purity that the angel appeared to her in the shape of a man. She thought it was a man. She was frightened, and she adjured him not to invade her privacy.

17 She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them: then We sent to her Our angel and he appeared before her as a man in all respects.

18 She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah."

19 He said: "Nay I am only a messenger from thy Lord (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son."

Allah had destined her to be the mother of the Prophet Jesus Christ, and now had come the time when this should be announced to her.

20 She said: "How shall I have a son seeing that no man has touched me and I am not unchaste?"

21 He said: "So (it will be): thy Lord saith `That is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us': it is a matter (so) decreed."

The mission of Jesus is announced in two ways (1) he was to be a Sign to men; his wonderful birth and wonderful life were to turn an ungodly world back to Allah; and (2) his mission was similar to that of all prophets of Allah. But the point here is that the Israelites, to whom Jesus was sent, were a hardened race, for whom the message of Jesus was truly a gospel of Mercy.

For anything that Allah wishes to create, He says "Be", and it is . There is no interval between His decree and its accomplishment, except such as He imposes by His decree. Time may be only a projection of our own minds in this world of relativity.

22 So she conceived him and she retired with him to a remote place.

The annunciation and the conception, we may suppose, took place in Nazareth (of Galilee), say 65 miles north of Jerusalem. The delivery took place in Bethlehem about 6 miles south of Jerusalem. It was a remote place, not only with reference to the distance of 71 miles, but because in Bethlehem itself the birth was in an obscure corner under a palm-tree, from which perhaps the babe was afterwards removed to a manger in a stable.

23 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: she cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! Would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"

She was but human, and suffered the pangs of an expectant mother, with no one to attend on her. The circumstances being peculiar, she had got far away from her people.

24 But he cried to her from beneath the (palm-free): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee;

25 "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee.

Unseen Providence had seen that she should not suffer from thirst or from hunger. The rivulet provided her with water also for ablutions.

26 "So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man say `I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious and this day will I enter into no talk with any human being.' "

Cool thine eye: An idiom for "comfort thyself and be glad". The literal meaning should not, however, be lost sight of. She was to cool her eyes (perhaps full of tears) with the fresh water of the rivulet and take comfort that a remarkable babe had been born to her. She was also to look around, and if any one came near, she was to decline all conversation. It was quite true: she was under a vow, and could not talk to any one.

She was to decline all conversation with man or woman, on the plea of a vow to Allah. The "fast" here does not mean abstinence literally from eating and drinking. She has just been advised to eat the dates and drink of the stream. It means abstinence from the ordinary household meals, and indeed from human intercourse generally.

27 At length she brought the (babe) to her people carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought!

The amazement of the people knew no bounds. In any case they were ready to think the worst of her, as she had disappeared from her kin for some time. But now she comes, shamelessly parading a babe in her arms! How she had disgraced the house of Aaron, the fountain of priesthood! We may suppose that the scene took place in the Temple in Jerusalem, or in Nazareth.

28 "O sister of Aaron! thy father was not a man of evil nor thy mother a woman unchaste!"

Aaron the brother of Moses was the first in the line of Israelite priesthood. Mary and her cousin Elisabeth (mother of Yahya) came of a priestly family, and were therefore, "sisters of Aaron" or daughters of 'Imran (who was Aaron's father). See n. 375 to iii. 35. Mary is reminded of her high lineage and the unexceptionable morals of her father and mother. How, they said, she had fallen, and disgraced the name of her progenitors!

29 But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"

What could Mary do? How could she explain? Would they, in their censorious mood, accept her explanation? All she could do was to point to the child, who, she knew, was no ordinary child. And the child came to her rescue. By a miracle he spoke, defended his mother, and preached-to an unbelieving audience.

30 He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet;

31 "And He hath made me Blessed wheresoever I be and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;

There is a parallelism throughout the accounts of Jesus and Yahya, with some variations. Both the parallelisms and the variations are interesting. For instance Jesus declares at the very outset that he is a servant of Allah, thus negativing the false notion that he was Allah or the son of Allah. The greatness of Yahya is described in terms that are not applied to Jesus, but the verses xix. 14-15 as applied to Yahya are in almost identical terms with those applied to Jesus here. Devotion in Prayer and Charity is a good description of Christ at its best, and pity, purity, and devotion in Yahya are a good description of the ways leading to Prayer and Charity, just as John led to Jesus.

32 "(He) hath made me kind to my mother and not overbearing or miserable;

Overbearing violence is not only unjust and harmful to those on whom it is practised; it is perhaps even more harmful to the person who practises it, for his soul becomes turbid, unsettled, and ultimately unhappy and wretched,-the state of those in Hell. Here the negative qualities are "not overbearing or miserable." As applied to John they were "not overbearing or rebellious." John bore his punishment from the State without any protest or drawing back.

33 "So Peace is on me the day I was born the day that I die and the Day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"!

and Christ was not crucified.

34 Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth about which they (vainly) dispute.

The disputations about the nature of Jesus Christ were vain, but also persistent and sanguinary. The modern Christian churches have thrown them into the background, but they would do well to abandon irrational dogmas altogether.

35 It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter He only says to it "Be" and it is.

Begetting a son is a physical act depending on the needs of men's animal nature. Allah Most High is independent of all needs, and it is derogatory to Him to attribute such an act to Him. It is merely a relic of pagan and anthropomorphic materialist superstitions.

36 Verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord: Him therefore serve ye: this is a Way that is straight.

As opposed to the crooked superstitions which take refuge in all sorts of metaphysical sophistries to prove three in one and one in three. In the Qur-an there is no crookedness (xviii. 1). Christ's teaching was simple, like his life, but the Christians have made it crooked.

37 But the sects differ among themselves: and woe to the Unbelievers because of the (coming) Judgment of a momentous Day!

Judgment: the word in the original is Mash-had, which implies many things: (1) the time or place where evidence is taken, as in a Court of Judgment; (2) the time or place where people are produced (to be judged); and (3) the occasion for such production for the taking of evidence. A very expressive phrase for the Day of Judgment.

38 How plainly will they see and hear the Day that they will appear before Us! But the unjust today are in error manifest!

and that whole passage, where the Resurrection is described.

39 But warn them of the Day of Distress when the matter will be determined: for (behold) they are negligent and they do not believe!

Hasrat: Sighs, sighing, regrets, distress.

40 It is We Who will inherit the earth and all beings thereon: to Us will they all be returned.

Material property passes from one to another: when one dies, another inherits it. Allah gives life and death, and all that survives after physical death goes back to Allah, the original source of all things.

41 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Abraham: he was a man of Truth a prophet.

42 Behold he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not and can profit thee nothing?

The reference to Abraham here is in relation to his tender solicitude for his father, who had not received the light of Unity, and to whom Abraham wanted to be a guide and friend.

43 "O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a Way that is even and straight.

Some are more receptive of Light than others. It is their duty and privilege to guide and point to the right Way.

Sawiyan-right, smooth, even; complete, perfect; hence the derived meaning: in full possession of all the physical senses; in that context, 'not dumb': , when the angel appears in the form of a man, 'completely like' a man, a man 'in all respects.'

44 "O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious.

The rebellion is all the more heinous and inexcusable, considering that Allah is Most Just, Most Merciful, Most Gracious.

45 "O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious so that thou become to Satan a friend."

To entertain a feeling of friendliness, instead of aversion, to Evil, is in itself a degradation of our nature, a Penalty which Allah imposes on our deliberate rejection of the Truth. And the friendliness to Evil also implies the sharing of the outlawry of Evil.

46 (The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods O Abraham? If thou forbear not I will indeed stone thee: now get away from me for a good long while!"

Note the gentle persuasive tone of Abraham in his speeches (for we may suppose those sentences to sum up a long course of arguments) and contrasted with the brusque and repellent tone of the father's reply in this verse. The one was the outcome of the true Light which had come to Abraham from Allah, as the other was the outcome of Pagan arrogance and the worship of brute force. The spiritual lesson from this episode of Abraham's life may be stated in four propositions: (1) the pious son is dutiful to his father and wishes him well in all things, material and spiritual, (2) if the father refuses Allah's Light, the son will do his utmost to bring such Light to the father; (3) having received the Light, the son will never renounce that Light, even if he has to forfeit his father's love and renounce his home; (4) even if the father repels him and turns him out, his answer will be a soft answer, full of love and forgiveness on the one hand, but firmness on behalf of Truth on the other.

47 Abraham said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious.

where this promise of Abraham to pray for his father is referred to, and its limitations pointed out.

48 "And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: Perhaps by my prayer to my Lord I shall be not unblest."

Abraham left his father and the home of his fathers (Ur of the Chaldees) and never returned. He left because he was turned out, and because it was not possible for him to make any compromise with what was false in religion. In return for abuse, he spoke gentle words. And he expressed his fervent hope that at least he (Abraham) would have Allah's blessing in reply to his prayers. Here was a prefigurement of another Hijrat many centuries later! In both cases the prayer was abundantly fulfilled.

49 When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob and each one of them We made a prophet.

Isaac and Isaac's son Jacob are mentioned here as carrying on one line of Abraham's traditions. The other line was carried on by Isma'il, who is mentioned independently five verses lower down, as his line got special honour in the Holy Prophet of Islam. That is why his mention comes after that of Moses.

50 And We bestowed of Our Mercy on them and We granted them lofty honor on the tongue of truth.

Abraham and his son and grandson Isaac and Jacob, and their line, maintained the banner of Allah's truth for many generations, and they won deservedly high praise-the praise of truth-on the tongues of men. Abraham prayed that he should be praised by the tongue of truth among men to come in later ages: xxvi. 84. Ordinary praise may mean nothing: it may be due to selfish flattery on the part of others or artful management by the person praised. Praise on the tongue of sincere truth is praise indeed!

51 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Moses: for he was specially chosen and he was an apostle (and) a prophet.

Moses was (1) especially chosen, and therefore prepared and instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, in order that he might free his people from Egyptian bondage; there may also be a reference to Moses's title of Kalimullah, the one to whom Allah spoke without th eintervention of angels (2) he was a prophet (nabi), in that he received inspiration; and (3) he was a messenger (rasul) in that he had a Book of Revelation, and an Ummat or organised Community, for which he instituted laws.

52 And We called him from the right side of Mount (Sinai) and made him draw near to Us for mystic (converse).

The incident here I think refers to the incidents described more fully . The time is when Moses (with his family) was travelling and grazing the flocks of his father-in-law Jethro, just before he got his commission from Allah. The place is somewhere near Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa). Moses sees a Fire in the distance, but when he goes there, he hears a voice that tells him it is sacred ground. Allah asked him to put off his shoes and to draw near, and when he went near, great mysteries were revealed to him. He was given his commission, and his brother Aaron was given to him to go with him and aid him. It is after that, that he and Aaron went and faced Pharaoh in Egypt. The right side of the mountain may mean that Moses heard the voice from the right side of the mountain as he faced it; or it may have the figurative meaning of "right" in Arabic, i.e., the side which was blessed or sacred ground.

53 And out of Our Mercy We gave him his brother Aaron (also) a prophet.

Moses was diffident, and reluctant to go to Pharaoh as he had an impediment in his tongue, and he asked that his brother Aaron should be associated with him in his mission. Allah in His Mercy granted his request.

54 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Ismail: He was (strictly) true to what he promised and he was an apostle (and) a prophet.

Isma'il was Az-zabih i.e., the chosen sacrifice for Allah in Muslim tradition. When Abraham told him of the sacrifice, he voluntarily offered himself for it, and never flinched from his promise, until the sacrifice was redeemed by the substitution of a ram under Allah's commands. He was the fountain-head of the Arabian Ummat, and in his posterity came the Prophet of Allah. The Ummat and the Book of Islam reflect back the prophethood on Isma'il.

55 He used to enjoin on his people Prayer and Charity and he was most acceptable in the sight of his Lord.

56 Also mention in the Book the case of Idris: he was a man of truth (and sincerity) (and) a prophet:

Idris is mentioned twice in the Qur-an, where he is mentioned among those who patiently persevered., that he was taken up without passing through the portals of death. All we are told is that he was a man of truth and sincerity, and a prophet, and that he had a high position among his people. It is this point which brings him in the series of men just mentioned; he kept himself in touch with his people, and was honoured among them. Spiritual progress need not cut us off from our people, for we have to help and guide them. He kept to truth and piety in the highest station.

57 And We raised him to a lofty station.

58 Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah did bestow His Grace of the posterity of Adam and of those whom We carried (in the Ark) with Noah and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel of those whom We guided and chose; whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them they would fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears.

The earlier generations are grouped into three epochs from a religious point of view: (1) from Adam to Noah, (2) from Noah to Abraham, and (3) from Abraham to an indefinite time, say to the time when the Message of Allah was corrupted and the need arose for the final Messenger of Unity and Truth. Israel is another name for Jacob.

The original is in the Aorist tense, implying that the "Posterity" alluded to includes not only the messengers but their worthy followers who are true to Allah and uphold His standard.

59 But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts: soon then will they face Destruction

This selfish godless posterity gains the upper hand at certain times, but even then there is always a minority who see the error of their ways, repent and believe, and live righteous lives. They are not penalised in the Hereafter because they were associated with the ungodly in time. They reap the full reward of their faith and righteousness.

60 Except those who repent and believe and work righteousness: for these will enter the Garden and will not be wronged in the least

61 Gardens of Eternity those which (Allah) Most Gracious has promised to His servants in the Unseen: for His promise must (necessarily) come to pass.

62 They will not there hear any vain discourse but only salutations of peace: and they will have therein their sustenance morning and evening.

Salam, translated "Peace", has a much wider signification. It includes (1) a sense of security and permanence, which is unknown in this life; (2) soundness, freedom from defects, perfection as in the word salim; (3) preservation, salvation, deliverance, as in the word sallama, (4) salutation, accord with those around us; (5) resignation, in the sense that we are satisfied and not discontented; besides (6) the ordinary meaning of Peace, i.e., freedom from any jarring element. All these shades of meaning are implied in the word Islam. (19.62)

Rizq: literally sustenance or means of subsistence, the term covers all the means of perfect satisfaction of body and soul. Morning and evening, i.e., early and late, all the time, always. (19.62)

63 Such is the Garden which We give as an inheritance to those of Our Servants who guard against evil.

64 (The angels say:) "We descend not but by command of thy Lord: to Him belongeth what is before us and what is behind us and what is between: and thy Lord never doth forget"

We are apt to be impatient of the evils we see around us. We may give of our best service to Allah, and yet see no results. In our human short-sightedness we may complain within ourselves. But we must not be impatient. The angels of Grace come not haphazard, but by command of Allah according to His Universal Will and Purpose. Allah does not forget. If things are delayed, it is in accordance with a wise providence, which cares for all. Our plain duty is to be patient and constant in His service. (19.64)

65 "Lord of the heavens and of the earth and of all that is between them: so worship Him and be constant and patient in His worship: knowest thou of any who is worthy of the same Name as He?"

The more we taste of the truth and mystery of life, the more do we realise that there is no one to be mentioned in the same breath as Allah. He is above all names. But when we think of His beautiful qualities, and picture them to ourselves by names which give us some idea of Him, we can search the whole wide world of our imagination, and we shall not find another to be compared with Him in name or quality. He is the One: praise be to Him! (19.65)

66 Man says: "What! when I am dead shall I then be raised up alive?"

67 But does not man call to mind that We created him before out of nothing?

68 So by thy Lord without doubt We shall gather them together and (also) the Evil Ones (with them); then shall We bring them forth on their knees round about Hell;

The disbelief in a future life is not merely a philosophic doubt, but a warped will, a disingenuous obstinacy in face of our inner spiritual instincts and experiences. We were nothing before. Cannot the same Allah, Who created us out of nothing also continue our personality? But if we refuse to accept His light and guidance, our state will grow worse and worse. We shall be deprived of His grace. We shall be herded with satans. In utter humiliation we shall be faced with all the consequences of our refusal of Truth. (19.68)

Round about Hell: There are many ways leading to evil, and people get to it from all round. Hence the mention of the seven Gates to Hell: see xv. 44. and n. 1977. (19.68)

69 Then shall We certainly drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against (Allah) Most Gracious.

70 And certainly We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein.

71 Not one of you but will pass over it: this is with thy Lord a Decree which must be accomplished.

Three interpretations are possible, (1) The general interpretation is that every person must pass through or by or over the Fire. Those who have had Taqwa (see. n. 26 to ii. 2) will be saved by Allah's Mercy, while unrepentant sinners will suffer the torments in ignominy, (2) If we refer the pronoun "you" to those "in obstinate rebellion" in verse 69 above, both leaders and followers in sin, this verse only applies to the wicked, (3) Some refer this verse to the Bridge over Hell, the Bridge Sirat, over which all must pass to their final Destiny. This Bridge is not mentioned in the Qur-an. (19.71)

72 But We shall save those who guarded against evil and We shall leave the wrongdoers therein (humbled) to their knees.

73 When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them the Unbelievers say to those who believe "Which of the two sides is best in point of position? Which makes the best show in council?"

The Unbelievers may, for a time, make a better show in worldly position, or in people's assemblages where things are judged by the counting of heads. But Truth must prevail even in this world, and ultimately the positions must be reversed. (19.73)

74 But how many (countless) generations before them have We destroyed who were even better in equipment and in glitter to the eye?

75 Say: "If any men go astray (Allah) Most Gracious extends (the rope) to them. Until when they see the warning of Allah (being fulfilled) either in punishment or in (the approach of) the Hour they will at length realize who is worst in position and (who) weakest in forces!

Allah's warning is that every evil deed must have its punishment, and that there will be a Hereafter, the Day of Judgment, or the Hour, as it is frequently called. The punishment of evil often begins in this very life. For instance, over-indulgence and excesses of all kinds bring on their Nemesis quite soon in this very life. But some subtler forms of selfishness and sin will be punished as every evil will be punished-in its own good time, as the Hour approaches. In either case, the arrogant boasting sinners will realise that their taunt-who is best in position and in forces? (xix. 73)-is turned against themselves. (19.75)

76 "And Allah doth advance in guidance those who seek guidance; and the things that endure. Good Deeds are best in the sight of thy Lord as rewards and best in respect of (their) eventual returns."

These lines are the same as in xviii. 46 (second clause), (where see n. 2387), except that the word maradd (eventual returns) is here substituted for amal (hope). The meaning is practically the same: but "hope" is more appropriate in the passage dealing generally with this world's goods, and "eventual returns" in the passage dealing with the sinner's specific investments and commitments in worldly position and organised cliques. (19.76)

77 Hast thou then seen the (sort of) man who rejects Our Signs yet says: "I shall certainly be given wealth and children"?

Besides the man who boasts of wealth and power in actual possession, there is a type of man who boasts of getting them in the future and builds his worldly hopes thereon. Is he sure? He denies Allah, and His goodness and Mercy. But all good is in the hands of Allah. Can such a man then bind Allah to bless him when he rejects faith in Allah? Or does he pretend that he has penetrated to the mysteries of the future? For no man can tell what the future holds for him. (19.77)

78 Has he penetrated to the Unseen or has he taken a contract with (Allah) Most Gracious?

79 Nay! We shall record what he says and We Shall add and add to his punishment.

Such a man deserves double punishment,-for rejecting Allah, and for his blasphemies with His holy name. (19.79)

80 To Us shall return all that he talks of and he shall appear before Us bare and alone.

Literally, "We shall inherit", Cf. xix. 40 and n. 2492. Even if the man had property and power, it must go back to the Source of all things, and the man must appear before the Judgment-seat, alone and unaccompanied, stripped of all the things from which he expected so much! (19.80)

81 And they have taken (for worship) gods other than Allah to give them power and glory! 2525

'Izz=exalted rank, glory, power, might, the ability to impose one's will or to carry out one's will. (19.81)

82 Instead they shall reject their worship and become adversaries against them.

Cf. x. 28-30, where the idols deny that they knew anything of their worship, and leave their worshippers in the lurch; and v. 119, where Jesus denies that he asked for worship, and leaves his false worshippers to the punishment of Allah. (19.82)

83 Seest thou not that We have set the Evil Ones on against the Unbelievers to incite them with fury?

Under the laws instituted by Allah, when evil reaches a certain stage of rebellion and defiance, it is left to gather momentum and to rush with fury to its own destruction. It is given a certain amount of respite, as a last chance: but failing repentance, its days are numbered. The godly therefore should not worry themselves over the apparent worldly success of evil, but should get on with their own duties in a spirit of trust in Allah. (19.83)

84 So make no haste against them for We but count out to them a (limited) number (of days).

85 The day We shall gather the righteous to (Allah) Most Gracious like a band presented before a king for honors.

86 And We shall drive the sinners to Hell like thirsty cattle driven down to water

Note the contrast between the saved and the doomed. The one march with dignity like honoured ones before a king, and the other rush in anguish to their punishment like a herd of cattle driven down by thirst to their watering place. Note the metaphor of the water. They rush madly for water but are plunged into the Fire! (19.86)

87 None shall have the power of intercession but such a one as has received permission (or promise) from (Allah) Most Gracious.

88 They say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten a son!"

89 Indeed ye have put forth a thing most monstrous!

The belief in Allah begetting a son is not a question merely of words or of speculative thought. It is a stupendous blasphemy against Allah. It lowers Allah to the level of an animal. If combined with the doctrine of vicarious atonement, it amounts to a negation of Allah's justice and man's personal responsibility. It is destructive of all moral and spiritual order, and is condemned in the strongest possible terms. (19.89)

90 At if the skies are ready to burst the earth to split asunder and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin.

91 That they should invoke a son for (Allah) Most Gracious.

92 For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) Most Gracious that He should beget a son.

This basic principle was laid down early in the argument (xix. 35). It was illustrated by a reference to the personal history of many messengers, including Jesus himself, who behaved justly as men to their kith and kin and humbly served Allah. The evil results of such superstitions were pointed out in the case of many previous generations which went to their ruin by dishonouring Allah. And the argument is now rounded off towards the close of the Sura. (19.92)

93 Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant.

94 He does take and account of them (all) and hath numbered them (all) exactly.

Allah has no sons or favourites or parasites, such as we associate with human beings. On the other hand every creature of His gets His love, and His cherishing care. Everyone of them, however humble, is individually marked before His Throne of Justice and Mercy, and will stand before Him on his own deserts. (19.94)

95 And every one of them will come to him singly on the Day of Judgment.

96 On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness will (Allah) Most Gracious bestow Love.

His own love, and the love of man's fellow-creatures, in this world and in the Hereafter. Goodness breeds love and peace, and sin breeds hatred and contention. (19.96)

97 So have We made the (Qur'an) easy in thine own tongue that with it thou mayest give Glad Tidings to the righteous and warnings to people given to contention.

98 But how many (countless) generation before them have We destroyed? Canst thou find a single one of them (now) or hear (so much as) a whisper of them?

The bible gives the age for Methuselah at 969, but study of skeletal remains throughout history have shown that humans are living longer now than ever before. This longer lifespan is due in part to: more adequate diet, better sanitation, modern medicine, and lack of predation. In the past a person was considered very old if they lived long enough to get gray hair (one reason the Roman upper class died their hair gray, to appear older and wiser). There is no medical explanation for how any human could live to over 900yrs, unless we consider the fact that many ancient cultures based their time on Lunar phases, rather than Solar years. If Methuselah's age was given in Lunar cycles, rather than years as we know them, this would give him a very believable age of approximately 79. As for the decrease in age some bible readers are bound to point out, this would coincide with the spread of the Solar year (seasonal change) as the common measure of time. Anyone care to speculate?

The extreme ages were representative of a good person. At the time of the writing of the Old Testament, Jews did not believe that one was rewarded for a good life in the afterlife or heaven. They believed that this life was all there is. (I don't know if all Jews still believe this.) So, to point out to the reader how good certain people in the stories were, like Methuselah, the writers gave extreme ages to them as a way of saying that they were such good, righteous people that they lived forever. It's got nothing to do with the sun or the moon as it is not to be taken literally.

I'd say that when God created us, we were created to live forever, but as the curse weighed on us, our genes began to deteriorate through mutations, and so our lifespans decreased. They got a lot shorter after the Flood bc of the bottleneck that the human genome went through, and we've only been living longer bc we have better food and vaccines and so on.

You say that measuring Methusaleh's age in lunar years is more believable. Jesus' resurrection is unbelievable, yet it happened and is the foundation for our salvation. God doesn't care whether we find something believable or not, as long as we trust in Him. That does mean believing some things without proof, but if you're going to place any assumptions in something, they should be in God.

the chosen people, descendants of Adam, had the residule effects of Adam and Eve eating of the Tree of Life. The gentile, other races, did not partake of this. However, when Cain mated and produced with the other races, his blood line also had some residule effects of the tree of life.

I don't know much about lunar vs. solar, but I do know this:

Methuselah lived before the Deluge (Flood), a time when the Earth was covered by a "canopy" of vapor, otherwise known as the "Water Canopy." This canopy helped to block out most of the sun's harmful radiation, creating a climate where people, as well as plants and animals, could live for longer periods of time.

But then the Flood came and the "windows of heaven were opened" (Gen 7:11). All the water from the canopy emptied out to create the flood waters. After the Flood, there was no water canopy to protect earth from the sun's radiation. Earth's climate became more hostile to live in than it was to before. As such, people aged more quickly than they did before.

So, while people were able to live for hundreds of years before the Flood, people now only live rarely to be a hundred.

I've often thought this myself. While I've always found that Biblical accounts should be taken with a grain of salt, I do realize that they were at least partially based on truth. So something as basic and non-worldview shaking as counting someone's age probably wouldn't be fabricated to such a ridiculous degree. Thank you for pointing this out. : )

Excellent question. The Bible itself does say that Methuselah lived for 969 years before he died, according to the Bible book of Genesis chapter 5 verse 27. Now, some have suggested that Methusaleh's age was given on the basis of months. If this were so, then these men mentioned in the Bible book of Genesis would have become fathers at an exceptionally young age: Kenan before he turned six years old, and Enoch and Mahalalel when they were only five years old (see Genesis chapter 5, verses twelve, fifteen, and twenty-one).

But, you are right in the sense that the Bible has used other methods of recording time, such as days or months. Fortunately, if one were to read and compare a period of time during the great flood of Noah's day in Genesis chapter 7 verses 11 and 24 to Genesis chapter 8 verses 3 and 4, they would realize that it covers a period of "the 17th day of the second month to the 17th day of the seventh month", thus amounting a total of five months, or "150 days." This, therefore means that the Bible was referring to thirty-day months, twelve of which added up to a year, just like we do today.

Now maybe you don't believe the fact that Methuselah and other early Bible characters lived that long, it seems just impossible. But if one were to read the beginning of the book of Genesis, they would realize that God had made Adam and Eve, the first humans, to live forever, but since they sinned against God, they became imperfect and were told that they would die and so would their offspring (which includes us). Now, their becoming imperfect wasn't just something that happened fast and quickly for Adam and Eve. Their perfection slowly started fading away, being replaced with imperfection. This is why early Bible characters, such as Methuselah and others during Noah's day, lived up to be so old.

Fortunately, there is hope in store for us. (Romans 6:23, Revelation 21:4)

NO, there isn't and I for one, am not interested in a medical explanation. There is no explanation for a lot of things but that doesn't mean they are not true. If you want to believe what the Bible says, then you take it for what it says. If you don't, then no amount of speculation is going to change your mind.

As a Christian, it is just not one of those things I worry about. I know God is real and that he created the heavens and the Earth,,,,when? I wasn't there and neither were the scientists who think they have it figured out. Speculations does no one any good.

Besides, don't scientists believe it has to be something you can repeat in the physical world, before it can be proven...go ahead guys....create something from nothing...show us why you are right.....make us another world........

ok so my hair is kinda long, and i wear it over one eye like a silly emo kid hehe, but now it must be cut because the place i want to work at has some weird guidelines.

I love her, but I only took her on as a foster kind of thing 3 years ago. I'm really against animal cruelty, but I'm mildly allergic to cat hair and she sheds a lot more than any other cat I've had. I used to give her sooo much attention before I got my dog, and now she seems desperate for the love that I'm not giving her. we go away for most weekends and bring the dog with us. She cries for hours after we get home. (she always has enough food and water, but she needs more human contact!)

She's such a sweet soul. My husband complains about the hair everyday! he wakes up with it in his mouth. It's mean, but I just feel annoyed with her, so is it wrong to give her away, or would it be better to give her a life that she deserves? I feel like people would look at me like a bad person. And what if I give her away to someone that ends up meaner to her?

Try changing your cats diet. It is possible she is not getting all the necessary nutrients from her diet and she is therefore shedding. Any pet will be upset after leaving them alone so hire a petsitter. It can be a neighbor to feed, scoop the box, and spend a few minutes playing with the cat. Unless, the house is in a complete mess after you come from your trip she is probably doing fine being alone for the weekend. Her continious meowing is sort of a way of "catching up". Her environment has changed and changed again and meowing is her way of adjusting. After you come home just give her a little extra attention and some treats.

Remember that a cat is not some defective toy you can put back on the shelf. Considering you had her for three years and there are so many homeless animals out there you should try to see if there is anything more you can do to help her. We get annoyed with our pets and family members sometimes. Remember that there are ups and downs to being a pet owner. Part of being a pet owner is trying to work with the downs.

Please don't feel like a hypocrite, you tried the best you can. You gave her a loving home for this long. I think the best thing you can do is give her to a loving home. You don't want her to be lonely over the weekends and you don't want your health to suffer if you are allergic.

Don't worry what people think, they aren't in your house everyday to see what is really going on and I'm sure if you explain you have an allergy to cat hair they will understand.

Maybee you can give her to a friend or family member so you can still visit her...you might not feel as guilty that way.

well if you are unhappy, the boyfriend is unhappy, and the cat is unhappy, then you should give her away. if you were fostering here then return her to the shelter or rescue group you were fostering through. you could try and find a no kill shelter but there is usually a pretty long waiting list to get an animal in them. ask a friend or other relative to take her, or just run a risk and put an ad in the newspaper.

I don't want to sound mean, but yes, I think I'd feel guilty about giving her away. A pet is a lifelong (as long as the pet lives) commitment...you can't just give her away because you're irritated at her shedding her fur. Poor thing is probably stressed out because you don't really pay much attention to her and that will cause shedding. If you're allergic to cat hair, try Claritin or there are many other things you could try.

Brush her daily to control the shedding... Keep her out of your bedroom. I'm mildly allergic to my cats and when my allergies flair up bad I keep them out of my room.

Other then that, the only thing I'm going to add, is that it is very very difficult to find a home for a cat. I have foster kittens that I've had a couple months now that I've had NO decent inquiries on. Just people who wanted to keep them in a garage and feed them dog food. One of them is even marked like a little seal point siamese. They're fixed and everything. All I'm asking is $40 which is the equivalent of a vet visit around here.

Hopefully, if you do try to rehome her, you will ask for vet references. At least commit to finding her a decent new home. It will probably take around 9 months to a year to rehome her unless you get really lucky.

Don't offer her for less then the local vets charge for a vet appointment. If someone won't pay that, they won't take care of her either.

Though, just food for thought, most pet owners go through stages at some point where they feel less love for their pet. People go through that with every kind of relationship. One day, you'll question whether or not you love your husband. It happens to everybody. That's the point where you need to reconnect and evaluate. Spend some time with her and think about it. Chances are you're only away about every weekend cause it's summertime and there's places to camp and such. Probably, you aren't like that 8 months out of the year.

No, don't feel bad about it. You would be doing the right thing by finding her a home that would be more suitable for her. People DO have lifestyle changes, whether it's good or bad, and at this time you simply just cannot meet all her needs the way that she needs them to be met. You would be better off letting her be raised by someone else that can give her what she needs. Don't feel bad about it. And it doesn't mean that she won't continue having a place in your heart....

not many are able to admid that they have made a mistake, so its ag ood thing you did. I'm not gonna preach about the whole "you should have thought about it before" thing as in my opinion situations change. you realised that your cat is not happy anymore and you are making the right decision in giving her away and therefore a chance to get the affection it needs. but please don't do the same with further pets. one mistake is allowed and you should learn from it.

Gabriel came to a running stop in a forest clearing close to my house. After Gabriel had placed me down on the grass, he carefully folded in his wings. I had just enough time to smooth out my hair, before I felt wind on my face; the tree green combine into a mass of dim brown. Suddenly I was standing outside my front door and Gabriel standing on my left.

鈥榃hat did you do that for?鈥?I asked exasperated, trying to comb out the knots out of my hair with my fingers.

鈥榃ell, I would look a bit weird if a giant human bird flew from the sky outside your house,鈥?he said sarcastically.

鈥業 thought you agreed to ask me next time you decide to run super fast,鈥?I hissed firmly, folding my arms across my chest.

鈥業 don鈥檛 like waiting,鈥?he shrugged smiling at me joyfully. After finding that right key, I opened the front door. The familiar creaking of the door greeted me as I swung the door open. Luckily the lights were not on, as that would have indicated that Dad was home. He had strictly told me that night before that I was to be home before it was dark; I had clearly violated his rules. After turning on the main light by the front door, I turned around to see if Gabriel was behind me. A faint breeze fluttered in though the open door with it was a peculiar scent, it was bitter almost resembling vinegar. I saw Gabriel out of the corner of my eye stiffen, his eyes becoming a dark blue. I spun around to face him; his eyes were fixed on the sky.

鈥榃hat is it?鈥?I asked concerned, standing behind him.

鈥榁enator!鈥?He hissed though gritted teeth.

I all happened to fast, my eyes darted from left to right trying to figure out what was happening, I started to fell dizzy.

Suddenly every thing went black.

I was in a black room, or I think it was. Everything was covered in black; the only thing I could hear was a weak voice repeating my name over and over again.

The voice grew louder, and then I realized I was Gabriel voice.

鈥楨mily, Emily,鈥?he called frantically.

The black was fading, I saw a blurry outline of a face; and then it all came into view.

I was lying on the couch in the sitting room and Gabriel was sitting at the end of the couch, his forehead crumpled up in concern.

鈥榃hat happened,鈥?I muttered trying to sit up. Then realizing that was a bad idea, I lay back down.

鈥榊ou fainted,鈥?he said stroking my hair off my face.

Fainting at the point where the action starts doesn't cut it. It's like "... then I awoke, it was all a dream..." Ho hum.

It feels as if it is written very fast, slow it down, make us savor the words. Use the name less and use pronouns.

Use a word finder to find better words to say the same thing.

Use paragraphs and spell checker.

Aside from the previous critiques I offer the following:

1. Use quotation marks to indicate dialogue, not apostrophes.

2. Avoid using adverbs in the tags. Those are words ending with -ly in general form. Use action tags whenever possible or none at all if the reader knows who is talking.

3. Avoid words such as, "I saw, I looked, I noticed," et cetera. Simply describe the scene.

Go back through the tale and fill in the missing words, contractions, and smooth out the narrative. At some points it is contradictory (i.e., Gabriel's voice is yours, yet "he" calls out Emily twice).

With more effort and work while cutting away the fat of prose, your story will read smoothly.

School Uniforms - Good or Bad?

School uniforms are great. As the parent of kids, some who wore uniforms, some who didn't, I really, really, really, really see the benefits.

I spent less money on clothing. Yeah, the uniformed kid still had "civvies" but there weren't as many clothes.

Uniforms the school chose were quality garments that lasted forever. The tee shirts were inexpensive ($5-$7).

Kid got dressed faster in the morning.

Fewer clothing arguments.

The local transit could identify who the hooligans were by their clothing. THe school got calls %26amp; kids told to smarten up.

Research has shown that Canadian schools see uniforms as a method of underscoring the importance of academics, as opposed to US where uniforms are seen as a way to reduce crime.

I wish all schools had uniforms. I'm tired of seeing girls in skanky, sleazy hooker outfits, and boys dressed like junior rappers gone bad.

How do you make Coon Tail Extensions yourself?

I don't want other people's sites. I would like to know how I can make my own at home.

I already bought Human 8" Extensions from Sally's Beauty and I can access the hair dye, but how would I go about putting the stripes in there without making a huge mess?

And please don't make stupid comments about "being emo" or whatever. This is so that I can get some help with my question.

How do you make Coon Tail Extensions yourself?

Lay the hair extensions out flat, and get a dyeing brush if your kit doesn't come with one (it'll tell you on the box.) Put tape across the part you're not dying. It'll cause the hair to get a bit frizzy or tangled, but a little combing will fix that. Paint the dye on, avoiding the tape but making sure it covers it a little so the stripes are straight. Let process. Then wash out, leaving the tape on. The water should help the tape to loosen, then just pull it off while the extensions are still wet. Dry them and voila. Coon tail stripes.

And it's not emo, it's scene. Kiki Kannibal, scene queen, started the whole trend. I think I may take my own advice and do this...
